The Sims Hilditch Furniture Collection

Introducing the Emma Sofa, Emma Chair and Emma Ottoman, our new capsule collection created in partnership with George Smith. The collaboration is a celebration of timeless British design and quality craftsmanship, creating pieces to last generations.

The Story

George Smith is a leading British furniture brand which has become synonymous with quality craftsmanship and beautifully upholstered pieces made using responsibly sourced materials.

Our Creative Founder Emma Sims Hilditch has a long-standing relationship with George Smith. It started 35 years ago when her parents passed down their George Smith sofa to her which now sits in the Garden Room of her home. Today, her team specifies George Smith furniture for their clients’ homes in keeping with the ethos of creating high-quality interiors for posterity.

"Emma Sims-Hilditch, the studio’s founder and creative director after whom the new George Smith pieces are named, never sacrifices comfort for the sake of style — she is a designer who finds the most elegant pieces for every room and ensures that they are of the utmost enveloping loveliness."

House & Garden

The shared commitment of our two brands to create long-lasting furniture and interiors made George Smith a natural choice to collaborate with on our new furniture collection. Emma was also drawn to their traditional approach when creating each piece, keeping alive skills that might otherwise be lost to history. You can see details of the making process below.

Designed by Sims Hilditch and produced by George Smith, the resulting furniture collection is the product of our shared dedication to fine British craftsmanship, timeless design and sustainable and comfortable furniture which works well in city and country homes.

The Sims Hilditch furniture collection was featured in the Chelsea Textiles showroom at the launch party of our book: 'The Evolution of Home: English Interiors for a New Era'. The furniture was upholstered using fabric by Chelsea Textiles.

The Making Process

George Smith use responsibly sourced kiln-dried hardwood to build the custom-made frames for the Sims Hilditch Collection. Heavy steel coiled springs are tied into wide bands of interwoven jute webbing, providing balanced weight distribution for maximum comfort, and the seat cushions are hand-stuffed. The final detail is the fabric covering, expertly cut to the correct pattern and hand-stitched into position. We used natural fabrics for our collection, including linens and wools.

The frames of the Sims Hilditch Collection come with a 25-year guarantee and are tailor-made to each order, with more than 300 fabrics to choose from for the upholstery. The sizes and details of each piece can be adjusted by the expert George Smith makers to meet the needs of each client and each room, from a gentleman’s study to a large country sitting room.

We were privileged to visit the George Smith factory to see the pieces being made, choose the leg profiles and the fabric for the upholstery from their vast collection. Inspired by nature, the Sims Hilditch team pioneered the creative design behind each piece, working closely with George Smith to refine the concept and create a high-quality finish.

With its comfortable pillow back, the Emma sofa is a first for George Smith. The sloped, sleigh-like design transcends trends, meaning this piece will never date. It is available in two depths and can be dressed with or without a skirt. This allows it to work equally well when hosting guests in a smart sitting room, or for curling up with a book in a cosy library or family room.

Inspired by the Great British countryside and the silhouette of a 19th-century ‘colonial’ chair, the Emma chair is timeless, sculptural and refined. Like the Emma sofa, this chair would sit just as happily in an English country estate or converted farmhouse as it would in a London townhouse or flat.

Perfect to perch on or to use as a coffee table with a tray, the Emma Ottoman is as useful as it is attractive. The soft octagonal shape reflects the curves of the Wiltshire hills and the lower shelf is a great place to store coffee table books, magazines or games. This timeless piece looks beautiful in both a traditional and a more contemporary space.
